Looking at time passing through nature:

I talked about erosion in my last post so this is some of the research iv done since. This is the most interesting thing about time and how it has effected the landscapes across the world. It seems to be such a gradual process but completely changes the landscape around the sea. This is definitely something i am going to look into more.

Age and Nature: How do things age? Slow, fast? How can we tell somethings age?

The spider web is of particular interest because it is a drawing by Vija Celmins. She is a very detailed artist who spends time getting her artwork perfect. The spider web is so delicate and says a lot about the time the artist put into depicting it and also the time the spider spend going round in circles to build this. The other idea i liked was that this can be gone within seconds even though it took all of that time to build.

Gallery Visit

On my trip to the gallery i picked out a painting i thought could be related to time. The picture was a mountain scene from Norway and was painted in 1885. Initially the towering mountains drew me into the picture but as i walked closer it was actually the stillness of the water that was running through the middle. The picture had captured a moment in time but what really struck me was that if you were to go back to the place where this was painted in 2010 the picture would look reasonably the same. Only the very small details would have changed.

Time does not always have to be passing by quickly, sometimes the small changes are the ones easily missed. This has led me to think more about nature and erosion which is something i will be following up in my next blog...

On Kawara

Very interesting artist in his portrayal of time. He painted the month, date and year of each day. The same colours were usually used and the same type would be painted perfectly. If however he did not get his painting finished on the day he started it he would always destroy it. It is almost like if he did not reach the goals of the day the time would have been wasted.

Depicting time: Huge ladder giving a false perspective of it almost going up into space. I think this represents the journey of life. It is quite nostalgic that when you are at the top you can look back down on your life and the runners are your achievements.

Paul Pfeiffer

Time passing by in nature as the sun rises and sets. The video takes a long time to watch as it is done in slow motion so that you can hardly see the sun moving. You can however see the birds more clearly because they are moving so slow so it is a good way to pick out details.

Another bit of advertising for my paracetamol shot. Getting across the selling point of the shot, you dont need a glass, water, 16 paracetamol, fumbling with the blister packet, two paracetamol. All you need is the shot. The second example is how it would look in a magazine with a small pic of each item at the bottom of the page. It would span 6 pages.

Project Brief: to re-design Paracetamol.

My idea: Quick and easy. Instead of buying 16 paracetamol packet and a bottle of water there is a solution! The paracetamol shot that contains water and has two dissolvable paracetamol in the lid. Quickly shot it for instant relief whn on the go or keep on in your bag as they are small neatly packaged. What do you think??

Seeing as its christmas and everyone is talking about who will be no 1 i thought i would post it on here. Oh and also discretely encourage people to buy Rage Against the Machine's song Killing in the Name! Ok it may not be too christmassy but im sick of shit pop songs making it every year or just being in existence in general! Now dont get me wrong like a sucker i always get hooked on the X Factor and i like Joe but they really dont have to be no.1 every year without really working for it do they?

Did love the fact that they are both on the same record label tho so whichever wins it really wont matter because it will be more money is Simon Cowell's pockets!! Nice one!

But anyway my vote goes to a bit of Rage but each to their own :)

Following on from the previous post, i then designed the 6th form open day poster. Simple design that gets the information across with the new header at the top and the fish background. I also designed a leaflet keeping with this theme to be handed out at the evening for people to take away.

This is a logo i designed for Friesland Performing Arts School. It was to be used at the top of their monthly news letter that went home to parents. It therefore had to be sophisticated yet show that the school specialised in the arts. There were certain constraints placed upon me for example the fish, which was the school emblem, had to be there and could not be tampered with. The masks were then added as it is primarily a performing arts school and 6th form. I then went on to re-design the schools newsletter too.

Ok, so Tracey Emin was on tv the other night and i remembered how much i liked her work. However i then managed to get into an argument erm.. debate with my flat mate about it as he thought it wasnt art and that anyone could do it. 'Its just a bed with with a load of s*** round it' i think was his quote!! Well while i can see his point i really like it. There is something intriguing about every object that has been placed around it, the sheets, what all of the paper and objects on the floor are, what the person who owns it is like. Therefore why cant 'art' be there just to make people ask questions?

Benetton

I went into my Fashion lecture the other day and we had a lecture on Benetton and the photography of Toscani. It was really interesting as Toscani was able to be extremely controversial with his photographs and the message he was getting across. They ranged from war to aids and to prisoners on death row, not the usual fashion pictures here! However i really liked his work and how he strived to make people think with his advertising and challenge common prejudices.

A common theme he ran down was racism and this is what the top image symbolises, you actually don't no which person in handcuffs is the guard and which is the prisoner. It then has the tag line 'United colours of Benetton' underneath. I like this as the type does not take over from the power of the picture but gets across what these photographs were advertising which is essence was a clothing company.

The second photograph is focused on war. A member of the public actually sent these clothes to Toscani, they were the clothes her son was killed in. She then wrote that she wanted peace to come out of people seeing the horrors of war which Toscani included along the top of the photograph. This is a very powerful image and you can not help but to stop and think.

It was therefore a very effective advertising campaign even though it was almost completely off the point of fashion and the clothing industry. It made people stop in their tracks and take the time to think about what you were saying.

Music!

Well annoyed! Zico Chain (Band that is awesome check them out!) announced a tour ages ago and played in Notts and Derby (my home town) but i was in bloody Leeds! NOW i go home for xmas for a month and they announce another tour for Notts a week later when im back in LEEDS DAMN YOUUU! Do you not no the north?!?! and i thought Leeds was the best place ever for music but blah.rant over.

Think there should be more music venues in Leeds tho, everyone goes to Rock City in Nottingham yet Leeds doesnt really have a place like this, hmmm. Pauses for thought there!

How very slick indeed. This is the new wireless mouse for Apple. Not only does it click it swipes, double finger scrolls, zooms in... i could go on and on! Pretty good i reckon! This clock is in Prague, it sits on the Old Town Hall and attracts lots of visitors. It is an astronomical clock and has a really interesting history. Made in 1410 and added to over many years due to repairs, it was then damaged during the second world war. Among the things added were moving statues, the most known is Death that hits the bell of the clock every hour.

What i like about the clock is its intricacy and attention to detail. There are different dials that mean different things for example one pointer is for the sun, another for the moon and the last for the zodiac. It is one of the oldest clocks and i would really like to go and see it one day.

Watercolour Paintings

Two of my paintings done in watercolour with a brown paper background. I love to draw and photograph nature with a specific focus on the seasons. Its amazing to see things change over time and take a series of photos of the same tree in spring, summer, autumn and winter. There is a great contrast in colours and shapes that can be captured.

Sounds pretty good to me, would be good to do a bit of photoshop doodling while on the go even if it is basic. This is only the first preview of it so no doubt it will get better and better. All i need now is an iphone :(
