Good, Bad or 'that isnt art anyone can do that'

Ok, so Tracey Emin was on tv the other night and i remembered how much i liked her work. However i then managed to get into an argument erm.. debate with my flat mate about it as he thought it wasnt art and that anyone could do it. 'Its just a bed with with a load of s*** round it' i think was his quote!! Well while i can see his point i really like it. There is something intriguing about every object that has been placed around it, the sheets, what all of the paper and objects on the floor are, what the person who owns it is like. Therefore why cant 'art' be there just to make people ask questions?

  1. A quote i found from the internet: '...And you know all about working hard, do you Tracey?. Your idea of working hard is not quite the same as mine. See I work hard to keep my house tidy, where as you don’t, you just stick it in The Tate and call it art. You are to Art what Gordon Brown is to politics, only he is slightly better looking than you.'

    Haha harsh!

  2. I actually saw this on tv the other night, there were three pieces of art work and the contestant had to deduce which sold the most at auction. I have to agree with your friend that it really is just a bed with crap piled around it :P It isn't art, it's the culmination of a lazy person!

  3. Saw this at an exhibition in London a few years ago. It's become quite a popular piece. Whether you class it as art or not, you cannot argue against its publicity. Modern art will always generate these talking points - is it art, is it just a few objects - Personally I think that anything is art as long as you can justify it. People may say "thats rubbish, I could do that"...Im sure you could have, but you didnt did you. It takes a truly free artistic mind to create such abstract concepts and present them proudly to the world.

  4. How can it be art. I've got a room like that, it's not art, it's just mess. It's not fair that she has the chance to put that in a gallery and be able to talk crap so well as to convince people, and yet she is an 'artist'. it's just awful. :)
